Improvement of usability for self-service checkout


 

BACKGROUND

The aim of the project was to evaluate the existing self-service checkout at the supermarket Coop Konsum in Sweden according to the usability both empirically and theoretically. And with that as a basis develop an improved version, with the same functionality, but with better usability, which also was evaluated and compared with the older version. 

OUR PROCESS

The goal was to improve the current with respect to the six criteria: 

  1. Reduce the number of errors the user is doing
  2. Reduce the number of times assistance from the personnel must be called
  3. Reduce the total time to use the machine
  4. Increase the product's guessability 
  5. Increase the product's perceived simplicity

Usability test in lab

Representation of the existing checkout was made and tested in a Usability lab located at Chalmers University of Technology. The result was analysed and a re-design of both physical and digital part of it were developed. Same scenarios were tested with the new version and the result was compared with the old version to see if it had improved.
